Overview
You came to Hurghada for the sea. The desert behind it is the part most people never meet — and by mid-afternoon, when the heat loosens its grip, it opens up for exactly one shift. An air-conditioned car collects you from your hotel, and within half an hour the last wall of the last resort has dropped away behind you.
The first hundred metres teach you everything you need: throttle, weight, the way the front wheels float over soft sand. After that you stop thinking about the machine. Fifty-five kilometres of open desert run out ahead of the group, your guide setting the line through the valleys, and the only sounds are the engine and the wind past your helmet. You will not check the time once.
The Bedouin village is not a viewing platform. The families who host you have read this landscape for generations — which wadi holds water, which star says the night is half over — and the tea comes strong and sweet because that is how it is done here. A camel carries you the last short stretch at a walking pace, which is the speed this desert was crossed at for four thousand years before anyone brought an engine into it.
Then the sun drops behind the hills, the temperature falls with it, and the fire gets lit. Dinner comes off the grill, the show starts, and above all of it the sky fills with more stars than you have any right to see. You will go back to your hotel with sand in your shoes and the particular quiet of someone who has been a long way out and come back.
