Makadi: Private Giza, Sakkara, Memphis & Khan el-Khalili
A private full-day trip from Makadi Bay to ancient Cairo β the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx, the Step Pyramid of Sakkara and the ruins of Memphis, ending in the lantern-lit lanes of the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Your own Egyptologist, private air-conditioned car and lunch included.
Overview
You came to the Red Sea to switch off β and you will. But the monuments that made Egypt famous are sitting a few hours inland, and flying home having seen the Pyramids only on a postcard is a particular kind of regret. This is the day you close that gap: your own car, your own Egyptologist, and the whole of ancient Cairo laid out for one long, well-earned day.
You begin at Sakkara, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser rises in blunt terraces β the first time in history anyone stacked stone this high on purpose, the idea every later pyramid was reaching for. Then the Giza plateau opens up and the scale stops being a number. You stand at the foot of Khufuβs Great Pyramid, tip your head back, and lose the top of it against the sky. The Great Sphinx watches the desert the way it has watched every visitor before you. Later, at Memphis, the fallen colossus of Ramses II lies on its back, close enough to read the carving still cut into the stone.
This is deep time you can actually touch. The Great Pyramid is the only Wonder of the Ancient World still standing, and it was already more than two thousand years old when Cleopatra ruled β she lived closer to our own age than to the men who built it. Standing at its base, the pharaohs you half-remember from school collapse into a single horizon, and your own century feels suddenly, usefully small.
By late afternoon you are wandering the lantern-lit lanes of Khan el-Khalili, bargaining for a tin of spices or a silver charm while the smell of cardamom and leather drifts past β the living city that grew up in the monumentsβ shadow. Then your driver turns the car back toward the coast. You will doze on the road home and arrive at your hotel tired in the best possible way: someone who came to Egypt and actually met it.
